When the news came out that there would be yet another Chucky movie there were many people groaning “why?” After Seed of Chucky was such a tremendous failure why would the filmmakers even consider making another Chucky film. I’m not saying there was no thought put in Seed of Chucky but any thought there was went the wrong way and no one took a step back and said “wait guys, we’re making crap, we need to re-think this.”
But clearly they learned from their mistakes because Curse of Chucky is a step in the right direction horror movie wise.
In this day and age it’s pretty much impossible to scare viewers by popping out with a knife. This film scares you by creeping you. It affects you with disturbing atmosphere, mise en scène, and visuals. By the end of the dinner scene I was so uncomfortable and couldn’t take any more.
This film did it’s job, it told a story, and nothing was a waste of time/effort. Except for maybe the scene of the little girl peeing. Every character was necessary to move the story forward and even the title is good because everyone Chucky is mailed to is screwed, like a curse.
Plus I love the nanny surprise. The film implies that the brother in law is having an affair with the nanny and his wife is jealous. But, surprise, the wife is having the affair with the nanny and the husband suspects it. So, when the husband is too friendly with the nanny the wife is either jealous or suspicious of as to why he’s friendly.
I’m a bit wishy-washy about the ending, it might have explained more than it had to AND Chucky finally found a body for his soul…a little girls body, which is complicated because it breaks the rules of the first film that says the first person who sees Chucky is the only one he can possess. The bad guy won.
